Training to become a Driving Instructor is not as difficult as some might say. The problem comes when choosing your driving instructor training. You need the highest quality training possible, "without spending a fortune to qualify”. So, choose your Driving Instructor Course provider carefully. Place the initial emphasis on the quality and cost of the training and not on the promises of what the Driving School will give you when you pass. At the end of the day, if you don't qualify - you won't need the school.
Several things need to be considered when deciding whether to become a driving instructor.
These are just a few of the questions you need to ask yourself.
Once you're satisfied it's the right career for you, consider the qualifying process. You must register with the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) and be able to satisfy the conditions listed below.
Then there are 3 exams to be passed, in turn, which fully test your ability to qualify as an instructor. Here are a few facts...
You must have held a full UK / Northern Ireland, or European Driving License, for 3 1/2 years, are over the age of 21yrs old, preferable with no driving penalty points, or less than 6 points can be considered, you will also have passed the CRB Criminal Records Bureau check, to see if you are a good, fit and proper person to deliver training, before being accepted on the ADI Register.
Theory
This has to be taken at a Driving Standards Agency test centre, and consists of 100 multiple choice questions. The subjects are arranged into four bands, these are:
The Hazard Perception Test
A driving and eyesight test conducted by a Driving Standards Agency Supervising Examiner. The test can be conducted at a test centre local to your home and is approximately one hour long. You are expected to drive in a business like, disciplined manner along a varied route showing your ability to manoeuvre and control the car safely. This is not a learner test, but a vocational test. Your driving standard must be at a very high level, and our training will bring your skill to the advanced driving level required.
The test is designed to assess the quality of the instruction you give and your ability to communicate at an appropriate level with your pupils. The test will last approximately one hour and will be split into two parts where the examiner will role play two separate pupils. You will teach the examiner whilst in the car. You will be asked to demonstrate your knowledge and ability by giving practical tuition to the examiner. Once again, our structured learning will guide you through this part of your training.
The time it takes to complete the course depends mainly on your own personal ability; to develop and grow at your own pace.
We believe the best way of becoming a Driving Instructor, and, before deciding on whether to join a school or go it alone, is to get to know what the positives and negatives are before it's too late. Complete your ADI Training Course first, you'll then have far more worthwhile knowledge and an insight into the world of becoming a Driving Instructor allowing you to decide the best option to take. Once you have completed your Driving Instructor Training, you can approach any Driving School armed with your Trainee Licence or your Green ADI badge and decide what you want from them. By going the opposite way and signing up with a School first, you're in no position to negotiate, as you need them to train you.
